Arroyo Seco Racquet Club – iSquash

Arroyo Seco features four international squash courts, the first being constructed in 2013. The program has been flourishing, with a number of adult players at all levels enjoying the new facility. The club also has some top junior squash-players being groomed for national excellence by our in-house squash professional Bob Hanscom.

Squash-playing members may reserve the court for up to one week in advance – and pay no additional fees. Non-members may rent the squash court for $25.00 per hour on a walk-in basis, but may not reserve the court in advance.

Arroyo Seco boasts one of the country’s top squash teaching professionals, Bob Hanscom!

Born and brought up in New England and following his nine-year junior athletic career as a figure skater, Bob earned an advanced degree in bio-mechanical analysis and served as owner and director of the North Shore School of Gymnastics in Massachusetts.

Later he served as Executive Director of the American Gold elite gymnastic training center in Connecticut. He was also a member of the United States Elite Gymnastic Coaches Association, primarily involved with the selection process of potential elite gymnasts. During this time Bob competed in squash-league competition in the Boston area – and in 1984 earned his World Professional Squash Association (WPSA) teaching certification.

In 1986, Bob, wanting to find his “place in the sun,” came west and created the teaching professional’s job at the University Club of Los Angeles, which he held for seven years. In 1993 Bob became the teaching professional at the prestigious Los Angeles Athletic Club, overseeing their program and building the community to over 150 players, a position he held for 15 years.

Bob was nationally-ranked as the #1 player in his age group in America eight different years, beginning with the inaugural U.S. Squash international game championships in 1984. He is also a U.S. Squash nationally certified referee, assessor and instructor, conducting seminars and refereeing at the World Championships, Pan American Games, Pan Am Federation Championships and many national, regional and local squash events.

Bob may be best known for staging many unique squash events, among them the EBG U.S. Professional Championships numerous times; the North American Invitational, featuring the top male and female professional squash-players living in Canada, America and Mexico; the “Clash of the Female Titans,” featuring the four top women players in the world, Nicol David, Vanessa Atkinson, Rachael Grinham and Natalie Grainger, the only four women professional squash players who could boast being the current or former world  #1 and World Champion.

In 1998 Bob organized the United States National Squash Championships featuring over 300 players, where for the first time, setting up the all-glass portable squash court on the stage at Macy’s Mall in downtown LA. He also hosted in exhibition, Amr Shabana, the #1 professional player in the world – and Ramy Ashour, the (then) world junior champion…now senior world #1, and the Women’s International Players Association (WISPA) LA Squash Open.

At the Arroyo Seco Racquet Club, Bob has begun to develop a strong boys and girls junior program, (coaching and accompanying them to tournaments), as well as offering junior and adult private, semi-private and group lessons. Contact Bob for private lessons or for additional squash-related information.
